Old Railroad Grade

Old Railroad Grade

The print "Old Railroad Grade" is a scene from the trail Old Railroad Grade on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. The trail began as railroad tracks for logging Mt. Tamalpais and eventually became famous for its gravity cars in 1902 that took advantage of the steep, uninterrupted grade. In 1929, a wind-driven wildfire swept down the slopes of Mount Tamalpais and the last train came down the mountain caring sixty-five passengers to safety through the smoke. This image shows the beauty of the mountain from the trail with the fog coming over the west peak from the Pacific Ocean while the sun finds its way through to shine on the mountain.
